LANGUAGE CENTRE
Oxford University’s Language Centre is the hub for all students, staff and alumni who wish to learn a new language, improve, maintain (or resurrect!) their ability in a language, or advance their written and spoken Academic English.
The Language Centre runs term-time courses online and in person in the following languages and caters for a wide range of abilities:
- Academic English
- Arabic
- Dutch
- French
- German
- Greek
- Italian
- Japanese
- Mandarin
- Portuguese
- Russian
- Spanish
Modern Languages
Whether you would like to try a new language for just one term (General and Academic courses) or want to dive straight into a year-long course (Fast Track courses), there is something for everyone. If you’re looking for a more intensive learning experience, popular General courses run as an Intensive version in Weeks 8, 9 and 10 of Michaelmas and Hilary term.
Not sure of your level? Take an online language level evaluation test which is marked by Language Centre tutors who will provide feedback on which Stage you should join.
Courses include a combination of online learning pathways, activities and feedback using the University’s Virtual Learning Environment, Canvas, and small group conversation classes every week (either online or in person). This mode of delivery enables you to work flexibly at your own pace, access a complete set of learning materials before each class and beyond the life of the course, and to interact in small groups. Most of the courses are offered online as well as in person and at different times of the day to cater to all time zones.
Academic English
The Language Centre’s Academic English courses are mainly designed for international learners and cover an array of subjects such as pronunciation, key issues in academic writing and writing a thesis. These courses are taught by specialists in Academic English and are designed to help learners build skills and increase confidence.
Online and in person
Courses are taught through a flexible and inclusive mode of delivery; either entirely online (these courses all have ‘online’ in their title), or with classes held in person at the Language Centre on Woodstock Road. The Language Centre aims to contribute to keeping our collegiate University together in spirit and in pursuit of educational advancement, whether that be online or together in person.
Offers for alumni
The Language Centre is pleased to offer a special alumni price to full alumni (those with ‘alumni status’) for all their term-time courses. You can find up to date course fees for Academic English and Modern Languages on the Language Centre website.
